Kellen Mitchell’s car died on a stretch of county road with no houses, no traffic, and no reason for the engine to fail. One moment, the dash was lit; the next, everything went black, and the wipers stopped in mid-swipe. Rain hammered the windshield. When he opened the door, he saw a bus stop standing twenty yards ahead in the field, lit only by lightning.

It had not been there when he drove up.

The shelter looked old, the sign rusted, the roof dripping black water in steady threads. Kellen crossed the mud and stepped inside, more confused than afraid at first. The glass walls were smeared, as if dirty hands had been dragged across them many times.

Then he heard a soft tap behind him.

A figure stood just outside the back panel.

It was tall and wrong at the shoulders, with a face that looked half-rotted and half-starved, its mouth stretched open wide enough to show nothing but depth and shadow. One hand pressed to the glass. The fingers were too long. The nails clicked once, twice, and the thing smiled at him with broken teeth.

Kellen ran. But not fast enough.

The next morning, a passerby called it in after spotting Kellen’s clothes lying in the middle of an empty field. When the sheriff arrived, there was no sign of a struggle, no bus stop, and no body. They searched the ditch, the woods, and every stretch of roadside for miles. They never found him, and they never did.
